January and February

As we close out 2019, I hope you can make time to read at least one Christmas book- there are so many sweet, tender Christmas books out there!

We will start 2020 off with book club on January 23rd at my house discussing Charles Martin's book When Crickets Cry.

















In Febraury, we will meet on the 27th at Tonya Riley's home to discuss the book, Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott

America's First Daughter

Have you ladies started reading yet????  I am almost half way through and am fasinated by it- so much I didn't know about our first daughter and her father!

October and November

Thanks Amber for the “gem” of a night on Thursday!  

We made some changes for October and November- we will not be meeting in October but will meet on Thursday, November 21st at Barbara’s to discuss America’s First Daughter. It’s a longer book so we are giving you almost two months to read it!  

September

We will be reading and discussing The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho in September. We will meet at Amber McNamee’s on Thursday, Sept 26 th at 7:30 pm. This is a quick read with lots of great one liners about life. I have a copy of the book if anyone needs one to borrow. Hope to see you all there!

Book club is back!!!

It has been a long, hot summer and with everyone traveling and spending time with family, we didn’t meet up in July, BUT it’s the end of August now and school has started - SOOOOO book club is back and will be better than ever!  We are meeting this Thursday at 7:30 at Janet Snow’s home to discuss the book, Educated by Tara Westover. Janet has been planning something special for us and the book leads to a great discussion, so come!!  Hope to see you there!!!

NO BOOK CLUB IN JULY

Hey ladies- looks like July is going to be super busy for everyone and so we are going to skip July and meet next on Thursday, August 22nd at 7:30pm at Janet’s home. The book we will be discussing will be Educated by Tara Westover. So enjoy your July and keep reading and we will see you all in August!

June’s Book

We will be meeting Thursday, June 27th at 7:30 pm.  We will meet at Marcia Young’s to discuss the book My Grandfather’s Blessings. Summer is busy and know everyone has crazy schedules but I hope to see most of you there!

May’s Book

We will be meeting at 7:30pm on Thursday, May 23rd at my house (Sara Bingham’s.) We will be discussing Half Broke Horses. I am about half way through and really like it!  Hope you all enjoy it and can come share your thoughts with us.

If you checked it out from the library as a book buzz book, just a reminder it has to be back to the library on Tuesday (the 30th of April). The library has regular copies you can check out and it is available as an audiobook too.

Book club is tomorrow (Thursday) at Diane Peterson’s. We will be discussing The Rent Collector- hope to see you there!

Book Club -more changes...

Dear Readers-

Due to the need to simplify my life, there will be a few changes to how we will be doing book club.  This will be the place from now on to find out any info about book club.  I will no longer be sending out multiple emails a month.  We also will not be getting books through Book Buzz.  Many of you purchase the books and so to simplify things on my end, you each will just need to request the books through the library, an ILL (InterLibrary Loan for $1), borrow from a friend, or purchase the books on your own.  I am happy to show you how to place books on hold, suspend holds so they come when you want them, request an ILL, etc.  Your best friend will be the app bookmyne - I can show you how to use that if you need.  Come into the library anytime for help- I am usually there Mondays from 12:30-5, Tuesdays 10-12:30, and Wednesdays 12:30-9.

We will meet on the 4th Thursday of each month at 7:30pm except for November and December- we will meet WEDNESDAY, December 4th instead.

April 25th- Diane Peterson's- The Rent Collector by Cameron Wright

May 23rd- ? (if you want to host let me know)- Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls (we do have 15 copies of this book from book buzz at the library right now.  They will have to be returned by April 30th unfortunately.)

July 25th- Cricket Parry's - Educated by Tara Westover

August 22nd- Janet Snow's- Ginger Bread By Helen Oyeyemi (the library has a couple copies on order)

Date and Time changes to Book Club

Hello All-

We will now be meeting on the 4th Thursdays at 7:30pm (except in November we will bump the meeting to the following Wednesday, December 4th and then not meet again until January 23rd).  Hope that works so that few more people that want to come, can.

A few things:
-Some of the up coming books we will not be able to get through the library or through book buzz and will require you to purchase or borrow the book.  A few of the books we will be able to get through the book buzz program (yeah!!!)  and  I will let you know when those will be available for pick up at the library.  If you do not want to purchase a book, the library has an InterLibrary Loan program where you can request us to bring in books from other libraries in the country.  It does cost $1 per book.  If it is a book published in the last year, we can not to a InterLibrary Loan (so Educated is not available through an ILL.)

-it also looks like this book group is not really into refreshments (gasp!!!)  That is totally fine and helps me to eat less 😊, so if you are hosting DO NOT feel the need to offer a snack or treat and if you do make something, just be warned that you will probably have left overs (but I can help you eat those if you want😉)

-I know some of you have felt guilty for not reading the book or having a life outside of book club (how could you?!?!?)  and not being able to come each month- stop feeling guilty or apologizing!  Come when you can! Come if you haven't finished (or even started) the book! 

Okay- here are the books for the rest of the year that we know of (we have a couple we are still trying to decide on- I will update that info as I get it) and how to get a copy of the book:

April- The Rent Collector by Cameron Wright at Diane Peterson's- the library has several copies but they are checked out frequently so hurry and get on the hold list or borrow or buy a copy

May- Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls- we are getting 10 copies of this through book buzz and they should be available for pick up at the library on April 8th.

June- My Grandfather's Blessings by Rachel Naomi Remen at Marcia Young's- the library only has 2 copies so we will have to share those, I bought a used copy from Amazon for a few dollars that I am happy to pass around as well.  This book is NOT available in audio form.

July- Educated by Tara Westover at Cricket Parry's- the hold list at the library is 296 people long so, you will need to buy this.  There are a few people who have purchased a copy already and are willing to share.  You can get an ebook digital copy for around $1 on ebay- Amazon had the cheapest hardback at $16.80.  It is not in paperback yet (except for large print and that is $20.40)

August-Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi at Janet Snow's- I have put in a patron request for the library to purchase this - it is brand new book.  If we get some in, I will let you know as soon as possibles so you can buy or borrow a copy if the library does not purchase some.

September- still deciding!

October- America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray- You may need to purchase this one as well.  The Library has 4 copies so put a suspended hold it if you don't want to buy a copy!  You can also put in an ILL request for $1.

December- Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza - We will have 10 copies of this available through book buzz sometime in last October.

January- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer- we will have these available through book buzz the beginning of December.

Our Latest Happenings

We met last night and had a good discussion about Same Kind of Different as Me at Tonya's home.  We also planned out most of the rest of the year- we have a few months that we are still making final decisions on.  You can now see what we have coming up on the left side of our blog page.  I also added some more of your recommendations to our list on the right of the blog page.  Please let me know if you have more recommendations you want to add!

Next month, March 21st we will be meeting at Dlorah's home and discussing The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. We were able to get 10 copies through Book Buzz.  They are at the Farmington library now and ready to be checked out! You just need to go into the library with your library card (or driver's license) and ask for a copy of the book and let them know it is being held for you as a BOOK BUZZ book for the Oak Lane Book Club.  (the library has a special shelf in the back where they keep these books for us!)  Now, if you haven't used book buzz before, let me tell you a few things- the book will have a yellow paper on it with a special due date (we usually will have close to 6-8weeks to check out the books)- DO NOT REMOVE this paper.  PLEASE- return the book by the due date!!! If we don't, they will not let us keep using the book buzz program.  If you have questions or concerns about it - please call me or come in when I am at work (Mondays 12:30-5, Tuesdays 10-12:30, and Wednesdays 12:30-9.) 

Now, for some of the books coming up, we will get them through Book Buzz (Half Broke Horses, Left to Tell, and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society)

I am trying to get Book Buzz to purchase the title My Grandfather's Blessings for us- I will let you know what they say.  If they don't we may need to buy a few copies to pass around as the library only has one copy right now (I have it checked out and will try to get it returned soon!)

For those that we can't get through Book Buzz, you will need to either get them on your own through the library or purchase it.  Did you know you could put holds on books and then suspend the hold?  That way, you can put the books for the rest of the year on hold and then not get the books until you need them.  If you don't know how to do this, let  me know and I can show you!  Please go ahead and put a hold on The Rent Collector by Cameron Wright now so you will have time to get it and read it for April's book club- it is popular and gets checked out often so placing a hold now will save you stress later on! 

OK- this is too long already- go read something worthwhile!

Jacob T. Marley

We had a good discussion this past Thursday.  We talked about A Christmas Carol and Jacob T. Marley.   A few thoughts from one of members, Tonya, "The Christmas Carol reminded me that even when we get sidetracked it's never too late to get back on track.  I was happy to see that Jacob Marley had his chance for redemption. I liked how it said that giving someone love doesn't mean the loss of love for someone else.  I also like how they said to plant the seed of kindness even if you are not the one who reaps the reward."  I loved these books and think it will become a new tradition to read them each year around Christmas.

February we will be reading Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall- great non-fiction read!

March will be The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne

April will be The Rent Collector by Cameron Wright
