The Lions of Little Rock

11699349

Just finished reading our book for October and it was fantastic!  It will be required reading for my children.  I loved it.  It took me through the gamut of emotions. Can't wait to discuss it with you all on October 10th!

Goodreads Summary:

Two girls separated by race form an unbreakable bond during the tumultuous integration of Little Rock schools in 1958

Twelve-year-old Marlee doesn't have many friends until she meets Liz, the new girl at school. Liz is bold and brave, and always knows the right thing to say, especially to Sally, the resident mean girl. Liz even helps Marlee overcome her greatest fear - speaking, which Marlee never does outside her family.

But then Liz is gone, replaced by the rumor that she was a Negro girl passing as white. But Marlee decides that doesn't matter. Liz is her best friend. And to stay friends, Marlee and Liz are willing to take on integration and the dangers their friendship could bring to both their families.

New Book Club

I started this blog about 10 years ago.  It has sat here sad and neglected for the last 5 years.  Well, not anymore!!!  I deleted all the old posts and adult/young adult books suggestions from the past (I did leave the kid books just for fun.)  The new list of books suggestions come from our new members.

Last night was the first book club meeting of this new book club!  New State, New House, New People, New Books!!!!! NEW BOOK CLUB!!!  I am just a little excited (and overwhelmed) by the amount of interest my suggesting a neighborhood book club has brought.  We had 15 ladies here last night and several who couldn't make it this month but want to join us!  I am thrilled to know I am surrounded by so many book lovers! So many new friends to meet and learn from- I was so excited I didn't really get much sleep last night, but that is ok, book people are worth a few missed hours of rest. So, here is the plan we came up with last night for our book club:

We will meet on the second Wednesday of each month (minus December) at 7:00pm.  We will rotate who's home we will be meeting at.  You can sign up to host- which means: you provide the home for us to meet in, choose the book, lead the discussion of the book, and provide a little snack if you so desire.  Easy Peasy.  This is not a strict book club.  You  are welcome to come if you didn't read the book.  You are welcome to come when you can and we won't throw you out if miss it or hate the book.  In fact, if you don't like the book PLEASE come- it makes for a much more interesting discussion.  No hurt feelings allowed.  We all like different things and have different opinions- that is what makes us each so great!  So come, participate as much as you are comfortable with, eat or don't eat, share or just listen, and be part of our group!

I will post on here a continuing update of books suggested by our members and info for upcoming events.  Check back to see what we are up to or to find a good book to read.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 10th at 7:00pm at Amy B.'s home.  We will be reading The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine.  This book was not available to us through the book buzz program but the Davis County Library has 7 copies, Amy has 2, Libby by Overdrive as 1 audiobook, Audible has it as an audiobook, Weber County has 3 books, 1 ebook, and 1 electronic audiobook (Davis County Residence can get Weber county library cards!!!)  If we start reading now, we can pass the copies around so everyone gets a chance to read it by October 10th!
