Simplicity Parenting by Lisa M. Ross

both books are available at the library.  You are free to read both, one or the other or none!

We will not be meeting in December.  In January we will FINALLY review Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.  November's book will be posted the end of October.

kids book list

I haven't received too many book ideas for children but I have the list started (it also contains the books from the list we made 2 years ago.)  I will continue to add to it at any time when I find a new book or you let me know about new books you think other kids would like, so check it out periodically. You can access the list here or click on the link on the left hand side of this blog.  Thank you to those who have given me some ideas.

Also- just a reminder- no book club this month-BUT there will be a girls' night out tomorrow night at Patti Miller's pool area starting at 7pm  She  lives in Trail Ridge.  You can swim (or not), hang out, talk, play games, eat, and just enjoy a night away from home.  Call me if you have any questions.  Hope you are working on Les Miserables!

Monday, August 2, 2010

The month of August is pretty busy.  For those in our ward, there are acitvities planned for almost everyday this month.  SO, instead of adding one more thing for the kids, I am cancelling August's children's book group.  I will still put together a childrens' book idea list (with your help!) and just email it out and post it here on the blog, but we will not meet with the kids on the 19th as orginally planned.  We can still meet that night for some girl time if anyone is interested-just let me know!  Please leave comments or send me emails of your favorite kids' books or authors!  THANKS!!!!

What's coming up

We had a fun time at Poppy's on Thursday.  It was great to see some new faces and some old ones we have missed!  We are going to make a change to August's book group.  We are still reading Les Miserables but we will not be reviewing it until September.  August's book group will be a day time meeting with kids.  We will have another kids book list like we did a year or two ago.  Start thinking of you favorite children's books and authors- send me titles or author names either through comments here or email and we will get a list started.  We will meet in early September to do a review of Mockingjay the third book in the Hunger Games series that comes out on August 25th.  I will have more info on all these meetings and times soon.  Just keep reading Les Mis until then!

Poppy's Frozen Yogurt

Book Club is coming up on the 15th and we will be meeting at Poppy's Frozen Yogurt store.  The address is 9345 S Cimarron.  It is just south of Blue Diamond Road and just west of Durango- in the same little shopping center as Dunkin' Donuts and Papa John's pizza.  You don't have to eat any frozen yogurt if you want to come to book group this time, but I sure am!  They have a dairy free flavor available all the time for those of you who may be dairy free. Anyway- hope you are enjoying the reads for this month and maybe getting a start on Les Miserables for August (or a later date if we aren't done with it by then!) Have a great day!

P.S. if you need a book to fill your need for adventure unitl Mockingjay comes out- try The Mazer Runner by James Dashner.

Book deals

Have you heard of Cedar Fort books?  They have a thing called Chapter One Club which I'm (Natalie) signed up for. They occasionally send out the first chapter of books so you can get a sneak peek.  It's kind of cool.  I just read one for a book called The Hoarders and it seems interesting.  Just thought I'd pass the info along in case you didn't know of it already.

Thanks for the info Natalie!  Sounds great. and

In June we will be reading two books- you can pick which one you want to read or read them both!  We will meet at Liz Higginson's home to review them on the third Thursday (17th) at 8:00pm.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

A foundling, an old book of dark fairy tales, a secret garden, an aristocratic family, a love denied, and a mystery. The Forgotten Garden is a captivating, atmospheric and compulsively readable story of the past, secrets, family and memory from the international best-selling author Kate Morton.

Cassandra is lost, alone and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident ten years ago, feels like she has lost everything dear to her. But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.

Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early twentieth century - Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

The beloved American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the century, Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a poignant and moving tale filled with compassion and cruelty, laughter and heartache, crowded with life and people and incident. The story of young, sensitive, and idealistic Francie Nolan and her bittersweet formative years in the slums of Williamsburg has enchanted and inspired millions of readers for more than sixty years. By turns overwhelming, sublime, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the daily experiences of the unforgettable Nolans are raw with honesty and tenderly threaded with family connectedness -- in a work of literary art that brilliantly captures a unique time and place as well as incredibly rich moments of universal experience.
